And just like that, the summer’s nearly over and I’ve hardly had one second to breathe, let alone write. Yep, this year alone has been a whirlwind, but Summer 2K18 has all but disappeared without a spare moment. For me, this is due to being on the programming team for BlogHer, which this year happened to fall on August 8th and 9th -- not exactly ideal when you want to travel in the summer.
I was able, however, to get a long weekend in Cape Cod in July and last week, a nice R&R trip out to Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Never heard of it? Not surprising, as this area still remains nearly untouched. While I would love to keep it that way, I can’t help but share about it here.
I’ve been going out to Coeur d’Alene since I was about five or six, thanks to my mother who grew up in the Pacific Northwest and has a brother who’s made Coeur d’Alene his home. It is where I learned to waterski and spent a number of summers enjoying the mountains and crystal clear water (sometimes almost too clear -- I’d rather not know what’s at the bottom of a lake, ha). Before last week, the last time I made it out to Coeur d’Alene was in 2011, so suffice it to say, I was definitely due for a visit. Accompanied by my family and beau, we set out on the long journey to the land of potatoes.
Unfortunately, there is no direct flight from the New York area to Spokane Washington (the closest airport). So, on our way out, we flew from Newark to San Francisco before transferring to a baby plane for Spokane. Once we arrived, the long trip was well worth it. Supported by East Coast jet lag, we were able to wake up early each morning for a good sweat outside, whether that be running, hiking or biking. Starting early meant optimal time for boating and floating out on the water which are my two favorite parts of the vacation. By the end of the day, we were eager to rest our waterski muscles in the jacuzzi with a glass of wine or homemade beer from my uncle’s home brewery. Quite dreamy.
In terms of eats, we spent most of our meals at home on the grill, cooking salmon, chicken and the like. We did however, venture out to the town for a little shopping on one of the gloomier mornings (the one bummer about the weather during our time there was that the skies are currently clouded by smoke from the neighboring states’ wildfires) and spent our last dinner out at a brand new Mexican restaurant, Sonrisa -- and as noted on their menus, they were damn good tacos.
While my trip was a tad short -- three full days in Coeur d’Alene is not nearly enough for the long flights on either end -- it was an amazing escape from the city, and I’m excited to make it back there soon, whether that’s for more lake time, or in the winter for some real mountain skiing (I take your crowded and pricey Vail and raise you quiet and powdery Schweitzer). If the Adirondacks aren’t cutting it for you anymore, or Tahoe is getting too packed in the summer months, taking the extra trip to Coeur d’Alene is not a bad choice... and Julianne Hough would agree.
