I would like to preface this post by saying that I am a fan of vinegar. Whether that’s salt and vinegar chips (heh), or a perfectly balanced vinaigrette for my salads, I’m into it. When I first read about the seemingly endless health benefits of drinking apple cider vinegar, I was skeptical, mainly because I couldn’t stomach the idea of drinking straight vinegar without something to offset its acidity. However, about six months ago, when I was dealing with some stomach issues, I was recommended to add it to my morning routine and I haven’t looked back.
Apple cider vinegar has been touted as a remedy for many different medical issues. Research has claimed that the tart elixir can aid in acid reflux, lowering blood pressure, improving diabetes, and supporting weight loss due to its levels of acetic acid, probiotics, enzymes, potassium and magnesium. Not to mention, it can apparently be used as a household cleaner, treatment for your hair, skin and nails, and teeth whitener. While there are many claims that apple cider vinegar is a cure-all, I still take those claims with a grain of salt. That said, I have personally found that apple cider vinegar has dramatically improved my tummy bloat and related discomfort, and drinking it first thing in the morning has proved to be a great way to start my days with a fresh burst of energy.
After doing some research, I found a recipe for an apple cider vinegar “detox lemonade” that seemed to be the most stomachable of the lot. While its taste takes a bit of getting used to, I find it to be an energizing, hunger-curbing kickstart to my morning and it just makes me feel good. If you're interested in trying something new to improve your diet, I highly recommend it!
Apple Cider Vinegar Detox Lemonade
12 oz Water
2 Tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar
2 Tablespoons Lemon Juice
1 Teaspoon Honey
¼ Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
Combine all ingredients and mix well (the honey takes longer to incorporate in cold liquids).
(Try to) Enjoy!
